Advances in thoracoscopy: 100 years since Jacobaeus.

چکیده
Thoracoscopy provides the physician a window into the pleural space, and enables the biopsy of the parietal pleura under direct visual guidance, chest tube placement and pleurodesis for recurrent pleural effusions or pneumothoraces in selected patients. In this review, we discuss the advances that have been achieved in thoracoscopy since its inception more than a century ago.

100 years of thoracoscopy: historical notes.
In the historical evolution of thoracoscopy, which was initiated exactly one century ago by Hans Christian Jacobaeus, two distinct periods can be identified: one between 1910 and 1955, characterised by its use for the lysis of pleural adhesions to obtain therapeutic pneumothorax in lung tuberculosis, and the subsequent period which has seen the development of diagnostic applications, principall...
متن کاملMedical thoracoscopy/pleuroscopy: is it underutilized?
Thoracoscopy is a technique introduced more than 100 years ago. The first reported thoracoscopy is thought to be performed as early as 1866 by an Irish urologist Francis Richard Cruise. He examined the pleural cavity through pleurocutenous fistula of an 11-year-old girl with empyema.[1] However, Hans-Christian Jacobaeus, an internist from Sweden, is regarded to be the father of thoracoscopy, si...

The development of thoracoscopy has more than one hundred years of history since Jacobaeus described the first procedure in 1910. He used the thoracoscope to lyse adhesions in tuberculosis patients. This technique was adopted throughout Europe in the early decades of the 20(th) century for minor and diagnostic procedures. It is only in the last two decades that interest in minimally invasive th...
متن کاملLaparoscopy - The Early Attempts: Spotlighting Georg Kelling and Hans Christian Jacobaeus
The traditional gap between surgeons and internists was much wider 100 years ago than nowadays. At the beginning of the twentieth century, neither group was particularly open to the idea of scholarly exchange. In this respect, both early pioneers of laparoscopy, Georg Kelling (1866-1945) (Figure 1), a German surgeon of Dresden, and Hans Christian Jacobaeus (1879-1937) (Figure 2), an internist f...
متن کاملVideo assisted thoracoscopic surgery.
Video assisted thoracoscopy is now a well established technique in the armamentarium of the thoracic surgeon. Jacobaeus is credited with the technique of thoracoscopy and the first clinical application dates from 1913. He performed adhesiolysis to enhance pneumothorax therapy of tuberculosis via a cystoscope introduced into the pleural cavity. Before the 1990s thoracoscopic surgery was restrict...
